The Viannos Municipality, south east of Crete, is one of the areas that suffered the most during the German occupation. They have set the 9th of September as a day of commemoration of the people executed at that time. At the 3rd of September meeting of the Municipal Council decided unanimously to ask the Golden Dawn party not to attend the service because they are not welcome in their village. “Their presence here is a challenge for all democratic people”, stated the local authorities representatives and added “People who share nazi ideas are not welcome in our municipality”.
The statement was issued because there were rumours that a Golden Dawn delegation meant to be present at the commemoration service.
